What Does Servanthood Look Like?
One of the things that I'm trying to teach my children is how to serve others. Once a month our church participates in a ministry through the Women On Mission called the Isaiah 58 ministry. In this ministry we prepare sack lunches for people who don't have much and we take them either to their houses or to a central location where they can come get them, depending on the weather that month. My daughter got to participate in the ministry the last couple of months by putting a cookie into each sack lunch. She enjoyed helping and we made it a point to tell her why we were doing what we were doing.
Personally, I have been trying to teach my children servanthood by letting them help me sort through their clothes that don't fit them anymore and put them into a bag to be given away. A couple of months ago we got the privilege of giving some of their clothes, bedding and toys away to a family who didn't have anything for their two small children. It was obvious that my children enjoyed knowing that their toys and clothes would be enjoyed by that family.
It's also important to me to let my children know how much we need to be thankful for the work and help of different community workers. For instance, they have helped me bake some Amish Friendship Bread and take it to the police department, the fire department and the post office all with a note of thanks sharing with them that we love them and God does too. It's a small way that we can let others know about the love of Christ and a way I can actively show my children ways to share Christ's love with others.
We've also taken flowers and food to some of the older people in our church to let them know that they are cared for and loved. It's a great way to help different generations connect and learn from each other as well as give to one another.
There are so many ways to serve others. My prayer for my children is to serve as Jesus served, for He is the truest Servant of all. I am humbly reminded everyday to serve my children as Christ serves His church.
